With the serious coronavirus outbreak and shortage of surgical masks, we are all worried about the health of ourselves and our loved ones. We've found a quick and simple way to make a washable face mask.
DISCLAIMER: this face mask is NOT designed for preventing illness and virus. Wearing a surgical face mask, accompanied with good hygiene, social distancing, and proper disinfection, are the most effective ways to protect yourselves and others from the virus.
Things you'll need
- Thin elastic band
- The face mask pattern
- Flat metal wire
1 First, cut out the fabric with seam allowance according to the pattern (seam allowance not included). You can print the pattern here. Please make sure that you print it in 100% scale. The mask is composed of three parts–the nose (A), the face (B), and the chin (C).
2 Cut a thin strip of fabric which size can allow the metal wire to pass through and sew it on the upper part of A to make a tube. Leave an open end for insertion of metal wire.
3 Fold the seam allowance of the lower part of C, and sew it as shown.
4 Sew the upper part of C and the lower part of B together.
5 Sew the lower part of A and the upper part of B together.
6 Sew the thin elastic bands at the left and right side of B to form ear loops. Make sure the length of the bands does not make the mask too tight or loose.
7 Cut out the pieces with seam allowance according to the pattern. This is for the inner layer of the mask. Repeat step 3–5 to complete this layer.
8 Put the outer layer inside the inner layer and sew together except the lower part of C. You can put batting or your surgical mask between these two layers.
9 Turn the layers inside out, then insert the metal wire into the tube.
- You can use gauze cloth (the materials used for making baby handkerchief) to make the inner layer of the mask more comfortable, breathable, and water-absorbent.
- If you don't have an overlocker, you can use the zigzag stitch pattern of the sewing machine to overlock the edges.
- If you sew the mask by hand, you can make overlocking stitches by following the steps shown below：
- You can make the face mask more comfortable by resizing the pattern. Simply measure the length of different parts of your face as instructed in the pattern and you can make your pattern.
