With the coronavirus pandemic, we are all worried about the health of ourselves and our loved ones. Following the last post of washable face mask, we've come up with another simple and stylish face mask design and a downloadable pattern.
DISCLAIMER: this face mask is NOT designed for preventing illness and virus. Wearing a surgical face mask, accompanied with good hygiene, social distancing, and proper disinfection, are the most effective ways to protect yourselves and others from the virus.
Things you'll need
- Fabric
- Gauze cloth
- Thin elastic band
- The face mask pattern
- Flat metal wire
Steps

1 First, cut out the fabric with seam allowance according to the pattern (seam allowance not included). You can print the pattern here. Please make sure that you print it in 100% scale. The mask is composed of three parts–the nose (A), the face (B), and the chin (C).

2 Sew the four darts as shown.

3 Pin the two pieces of fabric together and sew as shown in the picture. Note that the dart (marked as red solid line) of the nose part should be folded downwards and that of the chin part should be folded upwards.

4 Open the seams in the middle and press them to the sides.

5 Turn to the right side of the mask and create topstitches using stretch triple straight stitch (≡≡≡≡) (marked as white broken lines) along the seams in the middle and along the fold lines of darts, i.e. sew the stitches below the fold line of the nose part and above that of the chin part.

6 Fold the seam allowance on the wrong side of the fabric and topstitch along the lower part of the chin part using the stretch triple straight stitch (≡≡≡≡).

7 Cut a thin strip of fabric which size can allow the metal wire to pass through and sew it on the upper part of nose part to make a tube. Sew both ends using the stretch triple straight stitch (≡≡≡≡).

8 Sew the fabric tube on the right side of the face mask. Leave an open end to insert the wire later.

9 Sew the thin elastic bands at the left and right side of the face mask to form ear loops. Make sure the length of the bands does not make the mask too tight or loose.

10 Repeat steps 1–6 to sew the inner layer of face mask with gauze cloth.

11 Put the outer layer inside the inner layer and sew together except the lower part of chin part. You can put batting or your surgical mask between these two layers.

12 Turn the layers inside out, topstitch the upper part, left and right side of the mask, then insert the metal wire into the tube.

Tips
- You can make the face mask more comfortable by resizing the pattern and extending upper part of nose part and the center part of the pattern.
